Specific Heat

The aims of this work package are:

  • to develop at least one reference facility based on absolute measurement methods, such as drop calorimetry or dynamic techniques (e.g. laser flash or pulse calorimetry),
  • to develop validated methods for the traceable measurement of the specific heat of solid materials between 1500 °C and 3000 °C, The results of project EMRP JRP ENG08 Metrofission show that the traceability of differential scanning calorimeters (often used by applying a comparative method for the determination of specific heat) is limited to a maximum temperature of 1400 °C even though such device can work to very high temperatures above 2000 °C. Different facilities based on absolute metrological approaches will be designed or improved and investigated by LNE, PTB, VINS, JRC, ZAE Bayern and TUG. The target uncertainty is 0.5 % below 1000 °C and 1.5 % above.

The work will be split in three tasks:

  • The development of reference facilities and methods with calibration procedures,
  • The metrological validation of the developed methods with uncertainty budgets,
  • The application of the methods on industrial materials.

Hi-TRACE

The project will establish new methods for characterising the thermophysical properties of any solid material up to 3000 °C, and launch a network of reference facilities and materials available to industry. By supporting reliable measurement practices, this project will improve the understanding of high-temperature materials and enable industries such as the aeronautics and energy sectors to develop novel and innovative materials)
